Typically, checking ink levels is necessary when your HP Photosmart C4280 printer produces light-coloured printouts or stops printing. The levels can help you to determine whether the issue is from low ink or another technical problem. Additionally, you might check ink levels before a print job to confirm that the printer has enough ink to complete a job. The HP Solution Center provides an estimated ink-level gauge. To access this information, you simply need to open the software on your computer.

Click the HP Solution Center icon on the Windows taskbar or double-click the desktop icon to open the software. If you don't see the icon in either area, click "Start," "All Programs," "HP" and then "HP Solution Center" to open the program.
Wait for the program to open. Click "Settings," "Print Settings" and then "Printer Toolbox." In the toolbox, look for the "Estimated Ink Levels" tab.
Click the tab to see a graphic of the estimated ink levels.
