Wait until the display screen begins flashing. This may take up to three seconds. If you previously used the thermometer, the most recent temperature recorded will appear in the display screen for the three-second period. Do not attempt to record the patient's temperature until you see an empty display screen flashing without any numbers.

Place the thermometer under the patient's tongue, next to the last back molar. Secure the patient's mouth to ensure the thermometer doesn't change positions or slide around. Moving the tip of the thermometer can compromise the accuracy of the temperature reading. While the thermometer is recording, you should hear a series of evenly spaced beeps for approximately one minute.

Listen for three successive beeps. These signal indicate completion of the temperature reading.

Remove the thermometer from the patient's mouth and record the temperature. Call your doctor immediately if the reading is over 37.8 degrees Celsius.
