Find a sturdy tree in the backyard. It must have a nice, thick branch that won't buckle under a large amount of weight. Hang and tug on the tree branch yourself first. If it can hold your weight it will hold your child's.

Set your ladder up against the tree branch where you want the horse swing to go. Make sure that this is far enough away from the tree trunk so that your child won't swing back into it.

Take the rope from the end of your horse swing and carry it up the ladder. Swing it around the branch and tie it at the top, not underneath. If you tie the knot underneath the knot will swing back and forth and wear away the bark on the tree as well as be in danger of coming loose. Make a second knot on top of the first one so that the horse swing stays secure.

Climb down the ladder and attach the other end of the rope to the horse swing. Double knot the rope here as well. Make sure your swing doesn't touch the ground but that it's not up so high that your child can't get on it.

Use your knife and cut off any excess rope.

Test the horse swing yourself first. If it's sturdy and doesn't come undone, you can immediately let your child play on it.

TIP

If your child isn't going to be home when you install the horse swing measure them with measuring tape. Take note of the height of their waist so you will know how high from the ground the swing should go.
